How to choose a car alarm

First of all, the best car alarm advice I can possibly give on choosing ANY audio component is to LISTEN TO IT before you buy it. Buy what you think sounds good, ignoring the specs and features. The only person who ultimately must be satisfied with your decision is YOU, the person who has to live with a piece of equipment every day. Audio is a subjective thing. Two pieces of equipment with the exact same on-paper specifications might sound entirely different to your ears. Listen and be critical. The worst thing that can happen is to be stuck with something that sounds harsh and grating to your ears. Also remember that the sound can never get "better" than the way it starts, which means the best sound quality always begins with the best source unit.

That said, it must also be noted that what sounds good in a shop may not always sound good in your car. The difficult acoustical environment of an automobile can make the best components sound like tin cans on a string. So the second bit of advice I can offer is make sure the installation of whatever component you choose is completed properly.

The first question to ask yourself is what features do you want or need? Do you want a light show in your dash with a deck that draws attention to itself simply by being there or do you want a head unit that blends in with the OEM look of your dash? Do you want the security of a removable or hide-away faceplate? Do you need to control a CD changer? Are you planning to use external amps, subwoofers, or other external processing equipment? Do you need to plug in a portable music player? Do you want the highest sound quality, or are you interested mainly in being loud? Is there a specific brand you like or are biased towards or against for some reason? These questions should be answered by you in the privacy of your home, not under the watchful eye (read PRESSURE) of the audio store sales clerk.

Sometimes people look for a specific piece of equipment simply for one feature they find intriguing (such as the auto-EQ system in the Blaupunkt San Francisco or the no-buttons-on-the-face all-remote-control Sony XPlode 860.) If this is the case, articles like this one are useless to you and you are wasting your time reading! Go out and shop for the best price on the gear you already know you want!

Speaking of audio sales clerks, many of them are quite knowledgeable about car audio in general and especially about the components carried in their shops. Use them if you feel comfortable with them. But beware of a sales person who seems to always want to steer you towards the most expensive components, or towards a particular brand or model that doesn't exactly meet your needs. Sounds to me like that person is on commission or the store is trying to move a particular brand and they could care less about your wants or needs. This is especially common in some of the large chain stores that have become very popular around the country. While it is true you can often get the best prices with those big box guys, the selection tends to be very limited and the help from the staff often leaves much to be desired. Always purchase from authorized dealers, as that is the only way you can ensure yourself of getting a full factory warranty and that the gear you purchase is what it claims to be. There are lots of folks selling refurbished or damaged or even counterfeit gear these days, especially on the Internet. Buyer beware if shopping on line!

The main component of your car audio system is called the "head unit." This is the part usually installed in your dash that normally includes an AM-FM radio receiver, a cassette player and/or CD player, and often contains internal amplifiers and other electronic components to allow you some control over your car's audio environment. This article will focus on this component.

Some common head unit terminology you should know:

Power. This is the power output from built-in amplifiers given in watts per channel, with modern powered head units rated anywhere from 30 to 60 watts per channel. This rating, by the way, is almost always a peak rating, meaning this is the maximum power the unit can spit out during the loudest peaks of the music without exceeding the heat dissipation limits of the amplifier. This is NOT the same as the RMS or continuous rating. The RMS rating is the average power the amplifier can put out all day long without distorting. This is a much more realistic rating for any amplifier in real-world use, and especially for the built-in head unit amps which tend to be prone to overheating because they are crammed into such a small area. A 40-watt peak amp might be rated at a realistic 12 watts RMS. This is normal. Look for a head unit with the highest RMS rating, ignoring the peak numbers usually blasted across the front of the unit as marketing hype. Usually a higher RMS number means better components used in the construction, better design, and higher quality. Ask the salesperson what the RMS rating is on a head unit they are trying to sell you. If they have no idea what you are talking about ("Hey, it says 160 watts, man!") then you probably do not want to deal with that salesperson. They are probably on summer break from college or high school and know about as much about car stereo as you do about the goat roping methods of Laplanders.

DIN. This is a European size standard (German I believe) that refers to the physical dimensions of the head unit face. Standard sizes are single-DIN, 1.5-DIN and double-DIN. Many cars come from the factory with 1.5 or double-DIN radios, or some non-standard variation (most notably American branded cars.) Be aware that while many fine manufacturers make head units in those sizes, you do not have to find a replacement head unit of the same configuration. Almost any standard single-DIN head unit will fit into almost any car. There are adapter kits (the most common being made by Metra) that perfectly fill the "hole in your dash" and allow you to mount a standard single-DIN head unit. Metra also makes wiring harness kits for almost any car of recent vintage. If you have your new head unit professionally installed, expect additional fees to pay for these items as they cost money and are not given away free to the installers. It is well worth the $30 or $40 for the proper kits. (Unless, of course, you like the look of a large gaping void or cardboard filler with duct tape in your dash.) If you install your new head unit yourself, it is well worth the money to get the proper kit for your car and to do it right. Chopping off the OEM wiring harness is the first sign of an amature install and means you will have a much harder time doing the job, and especially if you ever want to change the head unit or replace the factory unit. Most car stereo shops can order these kits for you or they are available on line.

Pre-outs. These are non-powered line level outputs designed to drive an external amplifier or to interface with an external processor like an equalizer or other device. These outputs are generally in the form of RCA (standard stereo) connectors. Most high quality head units these days have pre-outs. Even if you have no plans to use them, they are good to have for two reasons: One, if you ever upgrade or expand your system, such as adding a subwoofer or other external amplification, you will get much better results with these than with a deck lacking them. Two, they will give you a "warm and fuzzy" feeling that the electronics in your chosen head unit are high enough quality that the manufacturer felt it could be used in a high-end installation. Look for a head unit with three sets or pre-outs: front, rear, and sub woofer (also called "non-fading") for the best flexibility, although two or even one set will still allow expansion of the basic system.

I've mentioned subwoofers and external devices several times now. This article is not about choosing those; however, I must say one thing here. When you upgrade your head unit, especially from a factory stereo, you SHOULD consider upgrading your speakers at the same time. Most factory stereos are rated at much lower power than most after-market head units and the factory-installed speakers are matched to the low power of the factory head unit. Also, most OEM head units contain equalization systems to tailor the sound of the cheap OEM speakers to provide the "best" sound. Your new head unit will not have this EQ built in. If you install your new high-end 50 watt-per-channel head unit to drive your factory 10-watt peak speakers, you will be left scratching your head wondering why the factory speakers are now squawking and twitching like tin roofing in a hurricane. You will wonder if you messed up the installation and why you wasted $300 on such a high-end head unit if it sounds so bad. It's the OEM speakers, not the head unit.

If you want a subwoofer, which in my opinion is probably the one car audio component that can make the biggest difference in the quality of the sound, you will want to power it off an external amplifier. The built-in amplifier on most head units CAN be used to drive a sub, but you will never be satisfied with the results as large woofers simply require more power than the average head unit can deliver. Get help from your friendly sales technician at the local car stereo shop, not from a chain store, if you are interested in installing subs. This is how they make their living, and they will give you the best advice.

Other things to look for include ease of use and remote control. Remember that you will use your car stereo most often while you are driving, so the controls should be in a logical location. I have seen some decks (Kenwood CD receivers, for example) with very small buttons in awkward locations, requiring the operator to stare at the deck trying to find how to switch away from the all-Groucho Marx AM station. Taking ones eyes off the road for that kind of time can lead to problems much worse than Groucho's one-liners. A remote control, if you have never used one, may seem like a ridiculous proposition in the car. You cannot be more than arm's length away from the head unit while driving, can you? But as soon as you learn the button layout on the remote, you will find it is much easier, more convenient and safer to use it than to stare at the head unit trying to find the MUTE button.

And speaking of staring at the head unit, I am disturbed by the current trend toward animated displays and large LCD screens on the head unit face. They are neat, to be sure. The first time I saw one I sat and stared at it, stabbing the buttons to see how many different movies I could make it play. But the first time I drove a car with one installed (a Pioneer DEH-P7300) I found it distracting, annoying, and wished I could shut the damn dolphins OFF! If I had one of these in my car, I believe I would have to cover the display with a piece of masking tape to avoid a road-rage accident. To each his own. Some people would not consider a head unit that did not flash and demand attention. Others prefer plain fronts. As in sound quality, when it comes to aesthetics, choose whatever makes you happy.

Also remember that it is illegal in all 50 states to have a video screen capable of displaying moving images while the car is in motion installed so it can be viewed from the driver's seat. All currently available in-dash DVD players have safety circuits to disable the video on the screen when the car is able to move. Do not disable this system as it is unsafe and can cause accidents, and it can get you a fine if you are caught.

The final consideration (at least the final one I'm going to discuss in this article!) is, of course, price. You can spend anywhere from $20 for a head unit that fell off the back of someones truck to far more than $1000 for the top of the line. I suggest you find the model of your heart's desire at whatever stereo shop you prefer, write down the exact model number and asking price, and leave the shop. Don't succumb to on the spot sales pressure. The unit WILL be there tomorrow, and they WILL give you the same price, no matter what the sales person tries to tell you. Research the model you like at different retailers. Check on line if you must.

Once you find the lowest price available for the deck you are convinced you need, try going back to the best local stereo shop and see if they will meet that price. Often they will, or they will come very close, and buying locally is always preferable to on-line or mail order or buying from out of town if only for service if needed and for the full factory warranty, plus no waiting for delivery and the price often includes basic installation.

So listen to the head units, even ones you do not think you want. Find one you think sounds best. Get the features you like, want or need. Get a good price. Install it properly. Drive safely and enjoy.

The automaker is also planning to release similar warning equipment for other hybrid models. It has yet to decide whether to pre-install the system to every hybrid model as standard equipment.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s i-MiEV electric car will also come equipped with an alarm system for pedestrians from this autumn, as well as Nissan Motor's new Fuga hybrid model and Leaf electric vehicle -- both of which are scheduled to hit the market later this year.

LUDHIANA: Thieves broke into the house of a head constable in the Sector 32 here and took away a .32 bore pistol, a video camera and Rs 3,000 in cash. However, the cop who reached on the spot could not stop the thieves who sped away in a car though he fired at them with his service revolver.

On Friday night, head constable Kawaljeet Singh posted at CIA II, who has his house in Sector 32 in Jamalpur area, had gone to visit his relatives in the nearby GK Estate with his family and there was no one at home.

However, when he returned home at around 1 am, he saw a car parked in front of neighbouring vacant plot with three people sitting inside, but ignoring it he moved towards the house. Much to his surprise, he found that the door was locked from inside and when he peeped in, he saw two men coming towards the gate and when he raised a car alarm, they jumped out from backside.

When he saw that the people in the Zen car tried to run away he fired at the tyres of the car to stop them but the accused managed to run away. The family of the cop was left shocked by the incident.

On going inside, he found the house ransacked. He found his .32 bore pistol, 25 live cartridges, a video camera and Rs 3,000 in cash missing. He immediately informed the Division No 7 police station about the incident.

Sub-inspector Jaswinder Singh said, "We have already inspected the spot and now we are in the process of registering FIR."

I have a "Crime Stopper" alarm / keyless entry system on my car, it is about 2 years old and up until yesturday was working great. I droped my car off to have it smoged and the alarm chirped as it always did when i locked the doors... when i picked it up, the keyless entry still worked but the Alarm was completely dead! I went and confronted the tech who did my smog check but he said they NEVER mess with alarms or anything like that. Again, the Keyless part of the system is working fine, but the car alarm (meaning: Flashing headlights, siren, chirp,) have all seem to just stop working. Does anyone have any thoughts... I check the fuses but i would assume sence its all part of the same unit, that if the alarm went out then the keyless should have gone out also. I dont know, but i really dont want to drop another $150-200 on a new security system!

It sounds like the system is in Valet Mode. There should be a solid red LED on the dashboard. CAR manufacturers are to look at fitting car alarms to remind parents that they have a child with them, after the death of a young girl who was accidentally left for four hours in her mother's car.

Family Secretary Nadine Morano said she was planning a meeting with car-makers and alarm developers to look at what systems can be set up to avoid similar incidents.

The working group will examine what is involving in making the child alarm a standard feature in all new cars.

There have been 22 recorded cases of parents forgetting children in cars over the past two years, according to the Consumer Safety Commission, an independent public body.

The latest case involved a 37-year-old mother from Arceuil, south of Paris, whose 16-month-old daughter died from dehydration.

The girl was left alone in the car in the hottest part of the day, with outdoor temperatures of up to 27°C.

The woman said she had spent the night in hospital with her husband looking after another of their children, who is seriously ill. She woke up late for work and rushed straight to the office, forgetting to drop off her daughter with the childminder.

She was taken into police custody on Friday afternoon and released at the weekend following questioning.

In a similar case in 2008, a man from the Isère was handed an eight-month suspended prison after his two-and-a-half-year-old son died when he was accidentally left behind in a car.

Just before 6am (AEST) on Wednesday Kane Cashin, car alarm of Thornbury, found the thief sitting inside the car which the 20-year-old floor layer had left parked and locked in the street outside his home.

When Mr Cashin banged on the passenger window, he expected him to flee, but instead the intruder car alarm confronted him, demanded his car keys and said "would you like to get stabbed?".

"That's when I got a bit shaken, up as you would; no-one really wants to get stabbed," Mr Cashin later told reporters.

"And so I guess (I was) pretty frightened in that sort of situation."

Mr Cashin turned to run but the thief stabbed him in the right upper back.

As he tried to get away, Mr Cashin tripped but managed to throw the car keys towards his attacker.

But rather than grabbing them and taking off, the man stabbed Mr Cashin in the throat before driving away in the blue 180SX Nissan Coupe, registration number PUN 342.

"It's a bit low, I would have thought ... putting someone's life at risk just over a car," Mr Cashin said.

"The biggest thing that's got me is, why stab me in the throat after he's got what he wants? I'm dumbfounded by that."

After raising the alarm with his housemate at home, Mr Cashin was treated at the Austin Hospital.

He said doctors believed the weapon was a blunt object, which caused cuts, swelling and bruising on his neck.

Mr Cashin said he had saved for about a year and also taken out a loan to buy the car last December.

"I love my car, it's my pride and joy; I love working on it. Me and my mates get together and do a bit of work on it sometimes," he said.

"I have a very strong passion for cars and I've always wanted that car for a long time and I've worked hard to save up the money for it."

He was a floor layer and needed his car to travel to jobs, he said.

Detective-Sergeant Andrew Lawrence said police believe the weapon was a screwdriver or something similar.

The thief is described as being in his 30s, of Mediterranean appearance, with a skinny build, about 183 centimetres tall and unshaven.

He was wearing a black hoodie with a white motif on the front and white on the sleeves, a black beanie that may have had a white logo, dark track pants and runners.

Mr Cashin said if it happened again he would hand over the keys immediately, but his first instincts had been to resist and run.

Car-Alarm Door Sensors

This is the basic sensor that responds when a car thief opens any door of the car. Immediately, the car owner gets a signal. The sensor is either connected to a siren or to the interior lights. When the thief opens a car, switching mechanism built in the car door transfer electricity to the interior lights and alerts the thief.

Car-Alarm Shock Sensors

Shock sensors help a great deal in deterring thieves and vandals. If a car thief hits or moves any car, these sensors send a signal based on the kinetic velocity of the car. If the car receives a shock and feels an unidentified change in the intensity of motion, a warning alarm beeps. In some cases these sensors are also linked to the fuel engines wherein after detecting a drastic change in the intensity of motion, fuel engine automatically stops supplying fuel to the engine.

Car-Alarm Window and Pressure Sensors

These sensors are the main detectors for detecting broken windows. If a car thief hits the window of the car and breaks it down, these sensors detect the sound or the air pressure of the car. These sensors are connected to a microphone which in turn monitors the air pressure and in case of any variants, the air pressure fluctuation converts to electric current which is send to main controlling unit. In this way, specific sound will trigger the alarm and keep the thief away.

Car-Alarm Motion and Tilt Sensors

These sensors become functional when a car thief tows and drags the car to a safe place. Such sensors comprise o perimeter scanners that monitor any tilt, lifting and even slight movement of the car. Through these scanners it is also easy to monitor all the activities within a predetermined perimeter of the car park. Once the motion is scanned, the radio transmitter sends signal that are reflected by the receiver monitors. Similarly, tilt detectors are series of mercury switches made up of two electrical wires and a ball of mercury. This series of switches conducts electricity. In case of any car tilt or lifting, these electrical wires change the flow of circulation and warn the thief.

Moline police car alarm win grant

The Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System has awarded $34,170 to the Moline Police Department for ruggedized car alarm computers mounted in patrol cars. The state-of-the-art computers provide the ability to access state and national crime file and intelligence databases and communicate digitally with other law enforcement car alarm agencies nationwide.

As part of the grant program, ILEAS has provided $3,075,300 to 205 law enforcement agencies – both police and sheriffs – throughout Illinois for 450 squad car computers from Federal Homeland Security Grants through the Illinois Terrorism Task Force. The $6,834 cost of each of these devices is outside the financial means of many agencies.

Appellant quickly grabbed a television worth $350 or $370 from a store display, threw it into his car alarm cart without looking at the price, and walked off. He went to the domestics department, where he started looking around and over his shoulder. He removed the spider wrap, an alarm system Wal-Mart wraps around its televisions, car alarm and threw it on a shelf. He then went straight to the registers in the automotive department, where he paid for a cell phone charger and another small item. He then exited the store. De Los Santos could see that the clerk did not scan or ring up the television.

After confirming with the clerk which items had been paid for, De Los Santos called the police. He went outside, identified himself to appellant as Wal-Mart security, and said he needed to talk to appellant about some merchandise appellant may have forgotten to pay for. Appellant responded with an expletive and kept walking. De Los Santos grabbed appellant's wrist, but appellant pushed him away. Appellant told De Los Santos to back up and said, "`This is Dead End Locos.'" He also smirked at De Los Santos and said, "`I got you, homey.'"

Appellant tried to walk away with the shopping cart. Seeing the police arrive, appellant got nervous and shaky, pulled from his pocket what appeared to be crumpled receipts and looked through them, and kept asking De Los Santos just to let him go. It did not appear to De Los Santos that appellant had been drinking.

De Los Santos informed Merced Police Officer Arellano that appellant had taken a television out of the store without paying for it, and that he wanted to press charges for shoplifting. When Arellano informed appellant that he was under arrest, appellant said he did not steal the television. He did not offer to show Arellano any receipts, but said it was not his television. When Arellano told him to place his hands behind his back, appellant took off running and was tased by another officer.

Officer Cowings transported appellant to the hospital so he could be medically cleared. At the hospital, he read appellant his rights, and appellant agreed to talk to him. Appellant related that he had had a few beers before he went to the Wal-Mart to buy some items for the vehicle he had just purchased. While at the store, he placed the items in a shopping cart that already had a television in it. As he walked out of Wal-Mart, he was tackled by an unknown person. During the interview, Cowings did not smell alcohol on appellant's breath. Appellant did not seem inebriated. When asked why he ran from the officers, appellant said it was a stupid mistake. Appellant had approximately $232 in his wallet.

Cash and phone stolen from car alarm

The lady was approached by two other females looking for directions who are described as being of average height with bleached blond hair and car alarm who possibly spoke with a Traveller accent. The handbag contained €300 in cash and a Nokia phone. Gardai are investigating CCTV in the area. Anyone who witnessed the incident or car alarm with any further information is asked to contact local Gardai.

Trim Garda are also investigating an attempted burglary at the Madison Cosmetic warehouse premises on the Summerhill Road, Trim, between midday and 7pm on Saturday 21st August. The alarm was activated and a window to the premises was broken. Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area is asked to contact Trim Garda Station.

In a separate incident, approximately €1,500 worth of diesel was stolen from a yard at Moyrath, Kildalkey, between 11.30pm on 19th August and 3.30pm on 20th August. Some 300 gallons of diesel was stolen from a fuel tank. A silver Volvo estate vehicle was seen at the entrance to the yard on the night and anyone with any further information on this vehicle is asked to contact Gardai.

Ballivor Gardai are investigating a break-in to a car at Woodfield, Ballivor on Saturday, 21st August where a blue Nokia phone and a black wallet which contained no cash were taken. The driver's door was forced to the 99 registered Peugot 306 van.

In the past few years, a new type of auto security system has hit the market. Insurance companies like the LoJack too. Some of them are now giving their customers a rebate good toward purchase of the system, along with a reduction in their insurance premiums.

As car alarms become more sophisticated, so do car thieves. A new wrinkle in the auto theft industry is the acquisition of expensive components like air bags, which can be resold for hundreds of dollars. The temptation is so great that crooks will even risk their lives stealing air bags—criminals have been killed outright when an air bag went off while they were removing it from a car in the dead of night. Auto manufacturers are studying a number of factory installed solutions, including embedding particulate matter with a unique microscopic “fingerprint” in all of a car’s components—even its paint job.

Car owners on a budget swear by steering wheel locking devices like the “Club,” which also gets high marks from police departments. The nice thing about mechanical locking systems is that they provide a visual deterrent. Sure, any self-respecting car thief will know how to pick the lock on a Club, but that takes time, and crooks like to work fast, without arousing suspicion. Seeing a locking device on the steering wheel of your car might be all it takes to convince a thief to pass this one up and move on to easier pickings. In the end, when it comes to car alarms, any protection is better than none.

Twenty years ago, on Aug. 28, 1990, car alarm a tornado tore through Plainfield and the nearby suburbs, killing 29 people. To honor the anniversary of the tragic day, car alarm FOX Chicago News has compiled several personal accounts of the event. Janel Jaros shared this one with us.

As I write this story, it is 15 years later, but I remember that day clearly. My son Kyle is a survivor, and I thank God and his grandpa for that!

I worked at MetLife at the time, along with Kyle's dad and my inlaws.

It was sometime after 3 p.m., and it was storming in Aurora. The fire alarm went off at work. It was never said, but I think the lightening caused it. As we were standing outside in the storm, the sky was a weird grayish-greenish color. I was worried.

A short time after we were let back into the building, Jeanne, my sister-in-law came to me in tears and said, "My dad called, there was a tornado in Plainfield. You need to get there right away!"

You see, my son (18 months old then) was at his babysitter's house, which was in Plainfield. I have to admit I really wasn't too worried at that point. I had lived in Aurora all my life.

I had heard on a few occasions that a tornado went through, and all I ever saw were a few branches down, so I was like, 'how bad could it possibly be?'

Mike, (Kyle's dad) Jeanne and I got into the car and drove to Plainfield together.

The closer we got, the more worried I got. When I started seeing the debris scattered all
over and the treetops missing, I knew this was definitely more than high winds. The
traffic was horrendous.

Cherie Hauge (the babysitter) lived behind the Louis Joliet Mall. Since traffic was at a standstill, Mike and I got out near the mall and ran through the field to Byrum Blvd. while Jeanne continued to drive the car.

It was strange; all the houses on the west side of the street were still standing and houses on the east side of the street were gone. The house where my son was being cared for was not there.

So each and every night I'd swear to myself that I would get up and car alarm walk the next day. And yet each and every day, I'd wake up and determine that the heat and humidity would oppress me, frizz my hair, render me weak with dehydration... car alarm You get the picture.

Well, I'm back on track with the whole walking-for-exercise routine. For the past 3 weeks, I've laid out my exercise clothes next to the bed before retiring so I can dress quickly the following morning. Then I really commit: I set my alarm for 5 a.m. Yep, I rise before the sun and certainly before any of the neighbors on my street.

I head out the door at 5:15 a.m. into a cool, dark world, wearing all black so as not to be detected. I do walk on sidewalks, so no danger of getting smacked by a car. The moon and stars are still visible at this early hour. And it's a good thing, too, because light is a rare commodity; there are no street lamps, and all of the houses are dark, except for the rare few with motion sensors that light my passage.

At first, it was creepy. I felt like Dorothy on the road to Oz, making her way through the forest -- "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" While I haven't seen anything that menacing, I have spotted a deer, and discovered that a family of owls hoots through the wee hours from their perch in the woods behind my house. And I've identified the dogs in the neighborhood that really do "watchdog" their premises by yelping an alarm when I pass nearby.

But most of all I've discovered, in the shadows of lingering night, how energizing the daily effort can be. I've gone from a pathetic gasping slow trudge up fairly challenging hills to an enjoyable climb, with cardio benefits. I've also realized that this is a wonderfully quiet time (aside from the hoots and barks) when I can really think without interruption. Rare moments, indeed.

Homeowner claims car alarm someone's been partying

The owner of an unoccupied residence in the 9200 block of Whippoorwill Trail in Jupiter discovered someone had hosted a party in the house. Beer cans and drinking cups were strewn about the property, car alarm and a Playboy centerfold was hung up on a kitchen cabinet. A plastic bag containing a white granular substance was found on a counter. The party-goers broke a bathroom door latch.

Jewelry and car alarm watches were taken from a home in the 8800 block of North Bates Road in Palm Beach Gardens between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

A woman reported that someone had broken into a residence she and her mother own in the 9300 block of Acres Way in Lake Park. A neighbor confronted the intruder, but she knocked him down and fled. The trespassing woman apparently moved items around inside the residence and placed some things inside plastic garbage bags.

Someone entered a home in the 6700 block of Palm Garden Street in Jupiter between 7:05 and 7:35 a.m. and stole numerous pieces of gold and diamond jewelry. The thief cut a screen to a rear window, which had been left open by one of the residents.

Gold and silver jewelry was taken from an apartment in the 6700 block of Mallards Cove Road in Jupiter sometime between 4:20 and 7:10 p.m. A dog crate, with the dog still inside it, was found lying on its side.

But those opposed to the deal have increased operations since 2007. In March 2009, Irish Republican Army dissidents shot to death two off-duty British soldiers collecting pizzas and a policeman sitting in his car.

Poverty, unemployment and continued religious segregation are fueling a recruiting drive by groups clinging to the dream of getting the British out of Northern Ireland. The dissidents are recruiting, openly it is said, among poor youths who feel the Irish Republican Army sold out for a chance in power.

Even as the violence has increased, the financial support for the peace accord is being threatened by Britain's economic squeeze. Funding from the British government has already been cut by some 393 million pounds ($606 million) for this financial year and Northern Ireland must find additional savings of 128 million pounds ($197 million).

Though authorities are reticent to discuss the threat of increased attacks, funds earmarked to fight al-Qaida terror plots are being diverted to operations meant to quash attacks by dissidents.

The woman advised the officer she believed the individual entered the home by removing panels from the garage door. The officer checked the door and noted it did not appear to have been removed in any places. The woman then advised the officer she and her ex-husband have not been getting along and that neighbors inform her when he visits the residence. The officer advised the woman to notify the department if she discovers any items are missing.

Renessa D. Carcaise, Locus Avenue, Aliquippa, Pa., was cited with failure to control at 1:51 a.m. Aug. 18 on Macrum Street.

An officer was requested at a Garner Avenue residence at 10:41 p.m. Aug. 17 to remove an individual from the home. Upon arrival the officer spoke with a female resident, who advised her sons were in an argument and that everything was now settled. The officer spoke with the sons, who advised they were involved in a verbal argument and nothing more.

At 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17, a Lisbon Street resident reported seeing the same vehicle pass her house twice. The woman advised an officer responding to the report that a male and female known to her were in the vehicle which was headed toward Cyrus in LaCroft. The officer attempted to locate the vehicle but did not find it.

Barbara A. Board, Campground Road, reported at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 14 a for sale sign struck her vehicle while it was parked on Hess Road. Board reported the vehicle was parked at a church. She said she observed a strong gust of wind pick the sign up and caused it to strike the right quarter panel of the vehicle, causing damage.

Testimonies this week at the joint investigation by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and the US Coast Guard have revealed that plenty of people – employees of BP, Transocean and Halliburton – car alarm expressed safety concerns. All BP's rhetoric about safety being the top priority does not seem to have made it any easier for staff further down the food chain to ensure concerns were addressed. Take this April 16 email from BP engineering team leader Gregory Walz to BP well leader John Guide: "I do not like or want to disrupt your operations and I am a full believer that the rig needs only one team leader. I know the planning has been lagging behind the operations and I have to turn that around. I apologise if I have over step my bounds [sic]."

After seeing defendant standing next to her car, Waddell ran outside and punched defendant in the face. The two fell to the ground, with defendant on the bottom and Waddell on top of her. Waddell testified that defendant grabbed her by the neck and she had trouble breathing. Almost immediately, she felt "a hot, tingling feeling in car alarm neck." When defendant released her hold of Waddell's neck, Waddell realized she was bleeding. At that point, car alarm Waddell looked in defendant's hand and saw defendant holding a knife. Waddell, who was unarmed, unsuccessfully attempted to pry the knife loose from defendant's grasp, but did not succeed. Her fingers were cut as she continued to attempt to grab the knife away from defendant. Defendant then stabbed Waddell in the leg and abdomen, at which point Waddell screamed to Adams, "Micah, this bitch stabbed me. Micah, this bitch stabbed me." At that point, Adams intervened and separated the two women.

After the attorneys had completed their direct and cross-examination of Waddell, the judge stated that he "want[ed] to ask a few questions since this is a bench trial." At that point, he questioned Waddell about whether she had actually seen the knife, what the lighting conditions were like, when she had first seen the knife, what it looked like, how much of the metal blade she had observed, how wide the blade was, whether she had known defendant prior to that night and how long she had known her. The judge also asked Waddell a series of questions concerning her employment as a model and as an installer of special equipment on cars.

Notably, the judge asked Waddell whether she had ever, prior to the night in question, seen defendant with a knife, to which Waddell answered "yes." After Waddell testified she had indeed seen defendant in possession of a knife on a prior occasion, the judge asked "what type of knife was it that you saw her with? This is 404(b) information." Waddell answered, "a hand knife."

Police spoke with the cemetery’s manager, who advised that the parents’ gravestones has been temporarily removed because excavation was performed in the next plot, and that they had not yet had the chance to replace them.

Valuable tools, car alarm a computer and a hard drive were taken from a car at Beechmount estate in the early hours of last Tuesday morning, between 2am and 8.30am, while the door of a car parked outside a house at Dara Park was wrenched open during the night of Thursday/Friday last, 19/20 August, although nothing was taken.

A man who parked his car in the Newbridge industrial estate between 8pm on Thursday night and 8am the next morning, returned to the vehicle to discover that two windows had been smashed although again, nothing was taken from the car.

Finally, gardaí are also investigating an incident at The Maples apartment complex on Moorefield Road, which occurred at 3am on Friday morning last.

The owner was awoken by a bang, followed by the sound of his car alarm. He went out to discover that the back window of his car had been smashed.

Sgt Tom Flanagan of Newbridge station said the gardaí were appealing for information about this spate of attacks on cars, pointing out that local people should also be cautious if offered items, including computer or sat-nav equipment, which may have been stolen in this way.

Fifth grade seemed so much older than fourth. The classrooms were even on the top floor right down the hall from the sixth graders, instead of on the first floor sandwiched in between the kindergarten, car alarm second and third grade classes. The lowly first graders were relegated to the basement, next to the gym and the library.

I loved the annual shopping for school supplies which was always in the afternoon of the first day of school, car alarm just hours after the teacher handed out a brightly colored mimeographed list of the required items. My mom and Gary, my younger brother, were in the car and we knew that ice cream always followed the school supply routine. It was 1971, a simpler time, long before malls were in every town and before malls morphed into big box stores taking root in every population center across the land.

Gorlins, the local candy store, was our destination. The door to the candy store had large bells on it to announce the arrival and departure of each customer. They might have been cowbells, although there were not many cows meandering through the grassy suburbs of Fair Lawn, New Jersey. The school supplies were stationed beyond the newspapers, comic books and magazines. There were some special magazines that were discretely placed behind the cash register. We were regulars and Gladys knew us all by first name.

Crayola crayons, markers, colored pencils, notebooks, pencil cases, sharpeners, three hole binders, dividers and special spiral notebooks were added to the basket. It was important to follow the teacher's precise instructions: three subject binders, one subject binders, remembering the required page count and size of the rules on the lines of the pages since this was a time when penmanship was taught along with content.

I was always considered the "artist" of the family and spent a lot of time on the creative considerations of each purchase, weighing which color binder would be the right choice for English, Science, Math or History. My favorite decisions involved choosing text book covers and folders which provided an explosion of colors and cool psychedelic designs, or Gary's favorite sports cars and rocket ships. Gary would be finished with all of his selections in about eight minutes flat. Then he'd grab a comic book -- the latest Richie Rich or Archie -- and climb onto one of the red leather stools at the marble ice cream fountain. Mom indulged me as I surely spent at least four times the time carefully choosing the supplies that would guarantee a successful school year.

As I climbed onto my stool, I ordered my usual double scoop of chocolate chip mint and chocolate chip ice cream with a special splurge -- chocolate sprinkles to acknowledge the first day of school. The teenager behind the fountain added the whipped cream and maraschino cherry on top for good measure. Mom had a coffee ice cream cone and we talked about our new teachers and the inevitable rotation of classmates as the Radburn School Administration tried to mix up the same ole sixty students into three different classroom configurations each year. When we got home I'd spend another hour writing my name in bubble letters, the first of many doodles to adorn the surfaces of all of the notebooks and book covers.

Now, Less Henderson at Hendo's will replace the stereo and put in a custom alarm system. His generosity floored friends of the Gawliks.

"It's just amazing to me because he hasn't even met Devon. He still to this day hasn't met Devon because he had to go out of town Saturday and missed the unveiling. Good heart," said Peggy Davenport, a close friend to the Gawlik family.

Devon is in Seattle getting further chemo treatment. By the time he gets back, he'll be in for another surprise with this brand new donated system.

The weekend of the shooting, Arbour had done heroin and cocaine with Camacho, according to a police report. That Saturday night, July 24, 2006, she watched him ditch a stolen box truck in Enfield and steal a station wagon, it states.

Later, Camacho drove Arbour to the Glastonbury Citgo station at 592 Hebron Ave., Arbour told police. She waited in the car while he broke in and stole cigarettes. The alarm sounded, and Camacho ran back to the car and drove off, heading west in the eastbound lane, the report states.

That's when the eastbound Saucier tried to stop him, but Camacho turned onto the on-ramp for Route 2 west, veered to the left and then the right and crashed into the wire-rope guardrail. He then pulled Arbour out of the car, police said, and dragged her down a steep embankment.

Saucier followed them, police said. Camacho eventually released his grip on Arbour, but he and Saucier scuffled in the thick brush. Camacho fell on Saucier, grabbed his gun and pulled the trigger.

Saucier's injuries didn't keep him from work for long. He now works in the detective division, Sgt. Joel White said Friday.

The devestation was caused by wind gusts up to 60 mph, the National Weather Service reported.

Tropical storm strength winds are between 39 and 73 mph. Category 1 hurricanes begin at 74 mph.

Some locations in Yuma also experienced up to two inches of rainfall and three quarters of an inch of nickel-size hail, the weather service said.

The tropical storm strength winds created a corridor of destruction as the weather cell passed south through Yuma from California.

However the Yuma Police Department has not reported any storm-related injuries in the city limits.

Storm-related emergency calls for service included business and residential structural damage, flooding, downed trees, downed power lines, power outages, stalled vehicles and numerous alarm calls, YPD reported.

During the storm the city of Yuma established the Emergency Operations Center. The police, fire, public works, parks and recreation and community development building safety officials have been very active in assessing and responding to storm related damage, the city reported.

All over town large trees and tree branches were uprooted and lay strewn on top of cars, houses and in the middle of streets. Trees also crushed several brick walls.

A huge pine tree was ripped out of the ground and fell on a house at the corner of 8th Avenue and 10th Street and a large mesquite tree was even blocking an entire alleyway south of Alice Byrne Elementary School Saturday evening. Other roadways were also blocked by large fallen trees.

Formula One report - Hispania Racing Team was back into action in Spa Francorchamps with the typical weather conditions in the Ardennes, after a wet and rainy first practice session in the morning, Bruno Senna finished in position 22 (2.07.737) and Sakon Yamamoto (2.10.507) was 24th.

In the afternoon, it dried up and the track got quicker. Consequently, both Hispania Racing, HRT F1 Team drivers improved and clocked their best lap times of 1.55.751 for Bruno Senna (22nd) and 1.56.039 for Sakon Yamamoto (23rd) in the last minutes of the session.
“It was a useful day for our team with the typical weather here in Spa under difficult conditions. We could run many laps and both drivers got a lot of track time. This was very important, as it prepared us for racing on the wet track, but also when it is drying up. Sakon Yamamoto stopped his car at the end of the second practice because of an alarm message displayed on his dash board and to avoid further damage. We got a lot of experience today and we will see, what awaits for us tomorrow.”

“Today it was tricky with a wet practice in the morning and a dry one in the afternoon. It was a good experience to run with all types of tyres and we got a lot of good data out of it. Lombard’s Cruise Nights event bothers some residents

Angie Johnson lives down the street from where the car show takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturdays all summer on St. Charles Road between Main and Elizabeth streets. She said the weekly event makes her feel trapped in her home.

“Most of these cars have a modified exhaust system that creates noise so loud they have been known to set off car alarms on other vehicles,” Johnson said. “We have to turn the volume up ridiculously loud to hear our TVs over the engines being revved right outside our windows.”

Johnson now lives in Lombard with her husband, and t, lived with her family in the village.

“We pray for tranquil evenings when the rain has canceled the event,” Johnson said.

In addition to her home life, she said the event affects her work at 20 West, a liquor store in the middle of the event’s third-mile stretch of St. Charles Road.

“Parking for the businesses on the north side of St. Charles Road is blocked from access because North Park is closed to all but pedestrian traffic. There’s no reason for North Park to be closed to auto traffic. Let people walk on the sidewalks,” Johnson said, adding the event’s increased foot traffic does not improve business at 20 West. “All of the Cruise Nights participants bring their coolers with all their own food and drink.”

Despite concerns from some residents, Lombard officials maintain that the event is a boon for the community. One of the event’s first organizers, Village Communications Coordinator Joelyn Kott said she has received only one complaint about Cruise Nights this year.

“I receive numerous calls each week about the entertainment, what time the band plays, where to park,” Kott said.

In fact, since the event began in late ’90s, Kott said owners of numerous businesses — including Sweet Street, Brix, and Punky’s — have told her Cruise Nights has had a positive effect.

“It has a following of people, both residents and nonresidents, who look forward to attending this event,” Kott said. “It is one event that the village sponsors that is family-focused and does not cost anything to attend.”

However, that doesn’t solve the problem for Lombard resident Julie Macias, who lives above 20 West in the heart of the Cruise Nights area. She said she has heard her drywall crumbling some Saturday nights as a result of vibrations from the loud noise of engines revving, and her biggest gripe with the event is the lack of parking it causes.

Obama administration is being a 'nuisance'

This is what is happening in the nation’s judicial branch and it has created some strange bedfellows. Before we get into who is teaming up with whom, lets do a quick recap.

This all starts with a little thing called “Nuisance Law.” Nuisance law is a part of American common law and it essentially allows someone to sue for causing a “nuisance.” Think of a car-alarm testing center operating next door. While no one is technically coming onto your property to bother you, the center’s use of its property would be seriously interfering with your ability to use your own.

Several years ago a case named AEP v. Connecticut made its way though the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. The only court higher is the U.S. Supreme Court. In the case, a coalition of environmental organizations, states and New York City sued several utility companies for the “public nuisance” caused by the greenhouse gases they emit. The 2nd Circuit ruled that since, at that time, there was no agency to regulate greenhouse gases, that the “nuisance law” could be applied.

Fast-forward to a post-EPA v. Massachusetts world, where the EPA can regulate greenhouse gases, and we have grounds for an appeal of the AEP v. Connecticut case. Still with me? Good, because this week, a Supreme Court brief filed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) argued why the case should be tossed back to the 2nd Circuit. The brief created odd teammates.

Why you need a 'zombie apocalypse' phone

You know it will happen someday: Zombies are chasing you down the street, groaning for your blood. You've been holed up for a week, and there's spotty cell service. It sure would be handy to request an emergency ammo drop from the black-helicopter guys.

No? OK, maybe there's a major blizzard. The power in your part of town goes out for days. Your landline is knocked out too. But there's still a faint cell signal from a couple of miles away. It would be no trouble to traverse that distance if there weren't eight feet of snow piled outside your door. You're running out of food and firewood. How do you call for a rescue?

So maybe the zombie apocalypse thing is a wee bit unlikely. But for emergencies, it still helps to have a simple, small, hardy backup phone that can make calls, send or receive text messages, and hold a charge for a very, very long time.

Yes, wireless networks often go down during disasters, but they also can come back online (at least in spots) before power has been restored to buildings. Or sometimes, voice service goes down, but text messages will still work. (During Hurricane Katrina, text messaging saved lives and was a key coordination tool for NOLA.com, according to Online Journalism Review.)

Or sometimes, wireless carriers or emergency personnel can set up temporary emergency cell towers within a few days.

But the battery on your regular cell phone may not hold a charge that long. So your nasty neighbor who won't share his drinking water might be chatting away to his daughter in Seattle while you're kicking yourself for not powering down your phone two days before.

A low-end, energy-efficient backup phone also can come in handy during smaller-scale emergencies -- if your car breaks down or if you just can't find your regular phone anywhere.

The woman crashed into the tree on the B4035 road near Chipping Campden at about 9.10pm.

She smelt burning and, fearing the car engine might ignite, she managed to undo her seat belt and open the car door.

However, in her struggle to escape, she fell and her car – a Renault Megane – ran over her leg before rolling down a hill and crashing into a brick wall.

The woman, who was clearly shaken, tried to get up but, due to the pain in her leg, was forced to crawl along the road to a nearby cottage, where the alarm was raised.

But this week, when the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections abruptly ordered all tenants out of the building in the city's Ogontz neighborhood due to safety concerns, Mitchell, 29, and his wife weren't celebrating.

"They could have given us a little bit more time to move," said Mitchell, cradling his cat in a backpack Thursday afternoon outside the building, on the 6100 block of North 17th Street. "At least a week."

Residents were told Tuesday night that they had until Thursday morning to clear out, Mitchell said. That deadline was extended to 2 p.m.

Major concerns about fire safety were behind the short-term notice to take over the property, the most drastic measure that L&I can take, said Maura Kennedy, a spokeswoman for the city.

The inoperable alarm system was determined to be beyond repair, the emergency lighting system wasn't working, and fire exits - stairwells or exterior escapes - were in disrepair, she said.

On Monday, L&I inspectors checked out a report that the alarm system had been vandalized, and on Tuesday evening they informed the residents of Thursday morning's deadline. Representatives of the city's Office of Supportive Housing were at the meeting, offering help.

"We recognize that this was short-term notice for the residents . . . so we are working them to provide emergency housing services," Kennedy said.

Many of the residents moving out Thursday said they planned to stay with relatives or friends. Mitchell and his wife were temporarily moving in with his mother.

Nova Marsh, 55, who lived in the building for five years, said Thursday afternoon that she still wasn't sure where she was going.

"Honestly, my apartment was very nice," she said. "But in the basement it was horrible. Trash everywhere, dirt, roaches in the dryer."

The three-story building, which has about 50 units, had other serious violations, too. After an Aug. 18 inspection, L&I announced that the owners would have to cease operation Sept. 21. The alarm problem simply accelerated the timetable, Kennedy said.

Ownership of the building was unclear because of a bankruptcy filing, she said.

Tenants said they had been told they would receive checks for three months of rent payments.

Sheila Minor, 48, was outside the building Thursday waiting for her brother, Anthony, to finish moving his things into their mother's car. Anthony Minor lived in the Granada Apartments for 13 years, she said.

The findings will benefit buyers and sellers trying to discover which of the latest features add value to vehicles.

Customers of ExchangeandMart.co.uk were asked to rate the importance of a range of car features.

It was found that the second highest driver must-haves were alarms and immobilisers with 67% of people rating them as extremely important and 21% saying they would prefer to have them.

In contrast, 67% said a TV or DVD player for passengers isn't important at all and 58% say the same about sub woofers. This offers sellers an important insight into what they need to highlight in their advertisement to draw the most interest.

Exchange and Mart recently teamed up with CAP, the motor industry's premier provider of used vehicle values, to provide accurate valuations to all buyers and sellers using the site.

After alarms, Sat Nav is the most important feature with 24% believing it is almost entirely necessary, and 44% preferring to have it. MP3 player kits also ranked highly, with 52% preferring to have one. Hands free mobile phone kits are important to 29%, while 50% would like to have speed camera detection.

The owner of a vacant house in the first block of Warsen Avenue near Wentzville reported Aug. 12 that someone opened the front window and apparently entered the house. Nothing was reported taken. The owner indicated he had numerous disputes with neighbors before he moved out.

The screen in a window of the Love-n-Care Pet Farm kennel, 104 Laura Hill Road, was reported cut Aug. 12, allowing burglars to enter the business and steal $50 from the cash register. Owners of the business said the window had been left unlocked and partially open to allow for ventilation.

The owners of a home in the first block of Running Waters Court near St. Charles reported Aug. 14 that a 32-inch flat-screen TV valued at $700 was missing when they returned from vacation. There were no signs of forced entry.

A representative of T.K. Realty reported on Aug. 19 an apparent break-in of one of their display homes at 1311 Mason Grove Drive. Two signs, valued at $282 each and stored inside, were reported taken. The theft apparently occurred in July but wasn't reported until more than a month later. Deputies said there were no signs of forced entry.

The Highway Loss Data Institute tracks these kinds of things, and they say second place on their list, for cars 1 to 3 years old, is the Ford F-250 crew 4WD pickup, followed by the Infiniti G37 2-door sedan, the Dodge Charger HEMI, the Hummer H2 4WD, the Chevrolet Corvette and the Nissan Pathfinder Armada. Lots of chrome and horsepower.

This list is based on highest number of insurance claims and the dollar amount of those claims.

Auto theft also can be looked at by considering which vehicles are most often stolen. In Oklahoma, they're usually small cars, like Honda Accords, and pickups.

No matter what you're driving, don't make it easy for thieves. Park in well-lit areas, keep valuables out of sight and invest in a car alarm and/or a hidden under-dash kill switch. Car thieves look for opportunities that are quick, easy and safe.

Finally, always lock your vehicle and take your keys with you. It's tempting to jump out of the car and run into a convenience store "for just a second,” but sometimes that second is all a thief needs.

There is something fishy with car

I purchased a new 2010 VW CC, and the car has 5,000 miles on it. During a long weekend, I left the car unused for four days, and the battery died. There were no lights on or external power drains. On Tuesday I went to the dealer where I purchased the car and was told: "There is nothing wrong with the car - they just do that because there is a lot of power drain due to the computer." I called another VW dealer and was given a similar answer. My question is, how can a car company design a car with a battery that lasts only four days? Shouldn't a car be able to sit for more than four days without the battery dying?
Why is that? Well, there are certain electronic components that continue to run even when your car is turned off. There's usually an alarm system, and there's the evaporative emissions system, which needs to cycle whether the car is running or not. Normally, there's enough juice in the battery to keep that up for a couple of weeks, unless it's extraordinarily cold outside.

The Johnson City police chief, who had sped 12 miles in the pre-dawn rain to the bank after Schuh triggered a panic alarm, drove the front bumper of his police car to within inches of the would-be robbers' car and got out, he said.

Holland said he stood on one side of the getaway car with his shotgun pointed at the chest of one of the men. That man was pointing his gun at Schuh's head.

"It was a standoff," Holland said. "I thought, 'This is what it's all about.'u2009"

Schuh and Holland recounted that morning Friday outside a federal courtroom in Austin, where the three men previously convicted in the attempted robbery were sentenced to decades in prison.

Schuh got away when the man holding the gun to his head lowered it and ran with one of his partners over a fence, through some cattle corrals and into nearby ranchland. They were arrested a day later after being spotted walking beside a rural road, according to court documents. The third defendant had been found hours after the attempted robbery in the trunk of the getaway vehicle.

That man, Baltazar Nava, 40, pleaded guilty in May to bank robbery and using a firearm in a crime of violence. U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks sentenced him to 17 years in federal prison. A Mexican citizen, Nava will be deported after serving his time, Sparks said.

The two men involved in the standoff , Ruilber Alexander Aleman, 31, and Nahum Samiento Ramirez, 21, were convicted of the same charges during a June trial. Sparks gave them each 20 years and ordered the Honduran citizens to be deported upon their release from prison.

The three men had lived in San Antonio at the time of the attempted robbery, Assistant U.S. Attorney Sharon Pierce said outside court.

Schuh, 63, said he has been in banking since 1979 but had never been the target of a robbery until the morning of Nov. 20, 2009. He arrived about 6:45 a.m., parked in back of the building, which is on U.S. 281 between Johnson City and Marble Falls, and headed for the door, he said.

They first tried Bruce’s gas cap, but since his truck has a locking gas cap the thieves didn’t get far. Then when the crooks tried the gas cap on the second car parked in the driveway, the alarm woke the couple up and apparently scared the gas guzzling thieves away.

The car alarm no doubt helped because on this particular Monday night, a nearby streetlight was out. Jean believes making their home more attractive to thieves looking to do their damage without getting caught.

“It went out about 11:30, then came back on about 1:15,” Jean said. “It was the whole neighborhood."

Winter Springs Police Chief Kevin Brunelle said his department has received roughly 10 calls this past week; some not as lucky as the Hovey’s. Some whose tanks were not locked and were drained.

"Be vigilant,” Brunelle said. “See what's going on in your neighborhood. Talk to your neighbors."

The Chief also added that if your gas tank doesn't lock, it might be a good idea to buy a locking gas cap.

The 220-member agency will have 78 fewer men and women to answer calls for house fires, car accidents, and rescue assignments. It's one-third of the department's manpower.

"It's uncharted water for everybody," said acting Fire Director Leonard Carmichael Jr. "We have to really evaluate what services we're going to provide to the city of Trenton."

On Wednesday, one day before a three-alarm fire devastated a Vine Street home and killed a young boy, Carmichael, firefighters' union president Wayne Wolk, and firefighters' Superior Officers Association president Capt. Paul McGowan sat down with The Times to speak about how layoffs will affect the department.

"It's going to be a challenge, that's all I can tell you," Carmichael said.

Four firehouses will likely be closed, Wolk said. Four battalion chiefs will be demoted to captain, and 16 captains will be demoted to firefighter. Units will be spread further throughout the city, decreasing response times.

"Our ability to do what we do will be compromised severely," McGowan said.

"When a firehouse closes, that risk is now on the residents of the city," he said.

Firefighters will be taking on greater risks as well. National standards recommend four firefighters on each engine: two to fight the fire from inside, with two others outside if the initial crew needs rescue. Most city trucks are already riding with three firefighters, but layoffs will force three-man engines all the time.

One of those three men has to stay behind to work the pumps, McGowan said, so the first two firefighters on the scene may rush without backup.

Packers gear, check. Camera, check. Babysitter, check. Tickets, better double-check (again). Check! There was no way I was going to arrive unprepared.

My husband, Nick, and I were out the door at 5:15 p.m. and the butterflies I had tried to stifle throughout the day were beginning to flap furiously in my belly.

“What’s wrong?” Nick asked me in the car once we hit the highway. I guess I was a little nervous we’d be late for the 7 p.m. Bishop’s Charities Game kickoff against the Indianapolis Colts. “I’m anxious. This is important,” I responded and tried to resist looking at my watch again.

As we drove, I began to think about how I was raised a Packers fan. I remember watching the games from little on and Sundays being not just any day, but “game day.”

My Grandma Gretz looked forward to the Yearbooks and would send them to my uncle in Florida. I’d always watch her record the stats from each game. I remember hearing stories about the Ice Bowl from my Dad (yes, he was there) and listening to everyone else’s recollections of the “big game.” When I told my brother, Joe, via e-mail that I was going Thursday he replied, “It’s about time!” It certainly was.

When we arrived in Ashwaubenon, I wondered where everyone was. Traffic was amazingly easy to maneuver, but as we got closer to the stadium, more vehicles came and you could tell the fans from the non-fans. Suddenly, I wasn’t the only one on a mission. I was glad to be wearing my seatbelt.

To which one can only say: “Simmer, Les.” It may be true that shedding 2,800 posts across Scotland is equivalent to losing three entire forces – Fife, Tayside and Dumfries and Galloway – but it is ludicrous that a country of five million people, the vast majority of them in the central belt, should need eight separate police forces in the first place. Mr Gray, despite his rhetoric, is not concerned only with protecting the public. He is a representative of the trade union for rank-and-file police officers, and it is the protection of their salaries and terms and conditions of employment which is his primary concern.

Yet despite the valuable job that they do, the modern professional police force is part of the crime problem as well as security against it. Despite the rhetoric from politicians – particularly, it must be said, those on the right – greater numbers of police officers are no guarantee of a reduction in crime.

In the 1950s, Scotland had around 5,000 officers; last year, the figure was 17,278. Across Britain, police numbers increased massively throughout the past century (they tripled in England and Wales), but then offences reported to the police grew from 2.4 per 1,000 population in 1900 to 109.4 per 1,000 population in 1992.

The reductions in the crime figures over the past 10 years cannot be attributed solely to extra policemen on the beat, and they are still astronomically higher than they were in 1954, when UK crime first began to rise substantially.

“Overall” crime figures are, however, comparatively unimportant when it comes to how people feel about crime. For a start, many more offences have been created. Simultaneously, all surveys, such as the British Crime Survey and the Scottish Policing Performance Framework Annual Report, estimate that more than half of crimes remain unreported, while public confidence in the police’s ability to respond quickly to crime, to solve it, catch criminals and to deal with incidents as they occur hovers between 50% and 60%. And fewer than half of people have confidence in the police’s ability to prevent crime.

What matters to most people is local crime, attacks on their property and violent or antisocial behaviour. As far as can be made out, the trends here are not encouraging. The bulk of the fall in crimes against property – burglaries, car theft and the like – probably owes more to technology such as alarms and CCTV, privately developed and financed, than it does to policing.

Meanwhile, the ability of conventional policing to respond to the rise in antisocial behaviour is gravely limited, because it springs from social collapse. And it is a more insidious type of crime, since it is driven not (as, say, theft is) by a rational, if immoral, assessment of whether the benefits of stealing are outweighed by the likely penalties – something which more police and stiffer sentences might affect – but by a lack of social order.

Construction projects affect RSU 9 schools

The massive retrofit that started last June is part of the nearly $65 million expansion and renovation of Mt. Blue High School/ Foster Technology Center into a 226,000-square-foot facility to be known as the Mt. Blue Learning Campus.

“We will have about a third less classroom space, but we will make it work,” said Foster Tech Director Glen Kapiloff.

“We're calling it the Annex, but the staff calls it 'the shoe,', both because it was once a shoe shop but also because it will also be like squeezing into an old shoe, like the nursery rhyme,” he said.

High school starts Wednesday, Sept. 1; kindergarten through grade nine starts Tuesday, Aug. 31.

The district's other major construction project is the new Mallett School that is going up behind the existing 1931 brick building on Quebec Street.

The old structure will continue to house students until the new facility opens in September 2011.

Parents have been alerted that parking, bus patterns and car access to the school will be disrupted as work on the $18.9 million, 60,000-square-foot school takes shape, said Mallett School Principal Tracy Williams.

Construction has also eliminated one of the three modular classrooms.

“Nothing will be impacting our daily routine in the classrooms,” she said. “And I am telling people that whatever inconveniences we have now will be gone when we open our brand new school next year.”

She said visitor parking will be available at the Farmington Community Center around the corner on Middle Street and at St. Joesph's Church Rectory on Quebec Street. Staff parking on the side of the school will remain.

At Foster Tech, Kapiloff said teachers and students packed up, moved, unpacked and set up equipment that had been in the vocational classrooms for decades. The maintenance staff from Mt. Blue Regional School District has worked all summer to prepare the Annex for opening day.

Pensioner denies charge of GBH

There is a reason most sporting events don’t start before noon and I can sum up that reason in three words: Because. That’s why.

You know how some coaches, when warning their players not to stay out too late, like to say “Nothing good happens after midnight”? Well, I would add “Nothing good happens before noon either,” to that statement.

Let’s review a typical Monday. Your alarm clock goes off at 6:30 a.m. You get up, take a shower, grab something unhealthy to eat, gulp down a cup of coffee and get to work before 9 a.m.

Anything good happen there? I rest my case.

Earlier in the week a professional golfer by the name of Jim Furyk was disqualified from something called “The Barclays” because he overslept and missed his 7:30 a.m. tee time.

When I read that I had a few questions.

Question No. 1: Is it just me, or is Jim missing a couple of vowels in his last name?

Question No. 2: What’s a Barclay and what does it have to do with golf?

Question No. 3: Are you kidding me? 7:30 in the morning? Who plays golf at 7:30 in the morning?

And, more importantly, who watches golf at 7:30 in the morning? If you find yourself watching golf at 7:30 in the morning, it’s time to re-examine your life.

But that’s just me.

I’ve been thinking about all of this since our 12-year-old daughter came home from junior high school this week and informed me that her volleyball team would be practicing at 6 a.m.

When a parent and child work out together, the attitude changes from, "'Tommy has a problem,' to, 'This is what we need to do, what the whole family needs to do,'" said Dr. Madge Zacharias, a board-certified pediatric physician. "It becomes a team approach. It fosters positive benefits for the family and builds family memories."

Losing weight is a goal for many Americans, but it is a difficult task, especially when attempted alone.

"Families that make changes together are more effective," said Dr. Edmond Wickham, assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University. "It is a recipe for disaster to single out an individual within a family, particularly when it's a child or an adolescent.

"It's important that the parent is role-modeling rather than just telling a child what to do. Adopting a healthier diet and increas ing physical activity is beneficial to everyone [in a family] regardless of weight."

As experts see the benefits of families working together to lose weight, more programs that stress teamwork are emerging. The Zacharias Ganey Health Institute in Richmond has about 20 families as members. In each 10-week weight-management class, the institute will see as many as four families and about 20 couples enroll in the 80-to-100 member course.

Wickham helps administer TEENS -- Teaching, Encouragement, Exercise, Nutrition and Support -- for families fighting an obesity problem.

At the Tuckahoe YMCA, the idea behind almost every fitness program is group participation.

"In a number of our programs, training for the Monument Avenue 10K and our weight-loss programs, we try to target couples, families and groups," said Scott St. John, wellness director.

St. John has seen an in increase in families working out together to battle weight issues and maintain overall fitness because of the class.

There comes a time when a police target senses he is under suspicion. For the businessman and gym junkie Hakan Ayik, 32, the realisation came more than two years ago with a series of short, sharp beeps from his mobile phone while he was waiting for a flight at Sydney Airport.

The beeping was a remote alarm alerting Ayik that he had some unwanted visitors at his Sydney apartment. His phone was connected to a surveillance system at the apartment which had just begun filming a small group of NSW police who, acting on a tip-off about the purchase of a money-counting machine, had decided to make inquiries.

Ayik wasted no time in sending his own investigators to the scene: several bulky and tattooed members of the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang. Their appearance brought a premature end to the police operation.

Not getting enough sleep has serious consequences for both teen learning and teen health. Studies suggest that sleep-deprived teens are more likely to struggle with depression, more likely to get in car crashes, more likely to gain weight and — to the point as the school year begins — more likely to fail in school.

A study undertaken in Minneapolis and the nearby suburb of Edina — each with very different socioeconomic makeups — revealed dramatic results when morning start times were shifted from 7:15 and 7:25 to 8:40 and 8:30.

“Students were noticeably more alert in the first two periods of the day,” the LA Times reported. “The cafeteria was calmer. There were fewer fights in the halls. Students, who were now getting nearly an hour more sleep each night, said they felt less depressed. They were raising their hands instead of falling asleep at their desks. Even parents thought their kids were easier to live with.”

Grades on quizzes and homework improved, tardiness rates dropped and graduation rates improved.

Studies in other states reported similar findings. Delaying start times even by just 30 minutes resulted in demonstrable better results.

As puberty approaches, preteens undergo a change in the time their bodies release melatonin, the hormone that signals bedtime, pushing it back by as long as two hours. So preteens and teens rarely are able to fall asleep before 11 p.m. But teenagers, sleep experts say, need on average about 9.25 hours of shut-eye.

To compensate, middle and high school students turn to caffeine-laced beverages such as soda and energy drinks, which have health consequences.

The reasons high schools start classes earlier than elementary schools in Maine are practical, and will not easily be dismissed. Parents don’t want their 7-year-old children waiting for a bus along the highway in the shadowy December dawn; a teen is more savvy about safety in that context. And high school sports require enough daylight hours, at least in the fall, after school, and enough time to travel to games.

Pelham man arrested watching girls

A press release issued by the Police Department noted that police initially arrested Mello "under the circumstances" for causing public alarm with his suspicious behavior in the midst of the car wash fundraiser and the Animal Rescue Network of New England pet adoption day.

"There was a significant amount of people of all ages in the area participating in both events. The two females who Mello had been watching were identified and found to be 13 and 15 years of age," the police statement said.

Police responded to a call at about noon of a suspicious man using binoculars to watch girls in the area of the Congregational Church on Main Street. When police arrived, they found seated in his station wagon near a tree in an otherwise empty parking lot.

The officers said they quickly realized Mello had positioned himself with a direct line of sight to two teenage girls who were taking part in the car wash.

Mello told police he had been watching the girls through his binoculars. Officers seized the binoculars after finding them on the floor.

Tara finally had her last big sob over Eggs when she visited his grave. No really, there was an entire scene of her walking up, bursting into tears, and just sobbing like a hot mess. And then? Long story short, Sam has turned into a raging alcoholic over night and cut off every friend he has. Then Drunk Sam hooked up with Drunk Tara as Tommy cut the alarm wires to Sam's vault. And that's all I'll say about this Drunk Sam business because that storyline is stupid, True Blood. Let's just stick with Mean Tara.

At Lafayette's humble abode, Jesus is still reeling from his experience on V. He keeps begging Lafayette to do it one more time but Lafayette tries to talk him down. Just as he's about to cave, Lafayette has a vision/aftershock from the V and sees a crazed, bone-through-the-nose man with face paint and demon ears where Jesus should be. This causes Lafayette to promptly (and wisely) ask Jesus to kindly leave, post haste. Later, Lafayette starts hearing voices coming from his living room and finds various historic dolls and religious figures have come to life. Is it a vision of spirits or aftershocks? Only season four can know!

The Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System recently announced that the Roxana Police Department would be awarded $6,834 for the purchase of a "ruggedized" computer that will be mounted in a patrol car. The ILEAS is overseeing the grants though the Illinois Terrorism Task Force.

"We already have two in-car computers, and this grant will allow us to have one for each of our patrol units," Roxana Police Chief Jim Smith said.

The department is expected to get the Panasonic Toughbook by the first of the year. The state-of-the-art computers provide officers the ability to access state and national crime files and intelligence databases and communicate digitally with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state, as well as to send information back to the department.

"The officer can type his reports on the laptop inside the vehicle and send it back to the department," Smith said.

Smith said the grant is allowing the department to purchase the additional computer that it otherwise would not have been able to get.

"Without this grant, we would have had to wait," he said.

Smith said the department would pay the $60-per-month cost for the computers' wireless data plan. He said it's important for the Police Department to get the most for an investment, and the heavy-duty computers can mitigate the costs that a standard laptop computer normally would demand in repairs and replacement.

The deep guttural growl of modified exhausts fitted to souped-up cars can match the decibel level of a pneumatic drill and make a car sound like it is racing at 70mph when it is barely travelling.

And while the noise may be music to the ears of the cars’ drivers, a rising number of complaints mean it is now considered an anti-social act by police.

The legal noise level is 82 decibels. A busy high street will produce a background noise level of around 80 decibels.

But the loudest exhaust measured so far by one Welsh police force registered 107 decibels – the same as a pneumatic road drill, chainsaw or an aircraft taking off from 300 metres away.

Now a special crackdown has been launched in one area of Cardiff to silence the menace keeping residents awake at night.

PC Jonathan Edwards, neighbourhood beat manager in the city’s Llanishen area, said: “People like to have their 1.2 litre Corsa sound like a tiger.”

“But purely and simply it’s affecting people’s quality of life. People are not able to open their windows in the summer because it’s waking their kids up.

“There’s a lady in the area that has two disabled children and sometimes they are woken up in the middle of the night.”

Using a handheld vehicle noise measurement kit loaned to him by a company called Neutrik UK PC Edwards launched the month-long Operation Le Mans.

So far he has tested 25 modified exhausts, some of which are designed for racing cars, at the road side. Of those, 21 had illegal decibel outputs.

Keith Rodenhister, a fire investigator with the state Fire Marshal's Office, spent much of Sunday morning at the scene.

"It's still too early to tell at this point. There are a lot of witnesses we need to talk to and it will take a while to put all the pieces together," he said when asked if a cause had been pinpointed.

The fire which was reported just before 7:15 p.m. Saturday, caused extensive water and smoke damage to the house and resulted in the occupants, who were in the process of moving out, losing many of their belongings.

Authorities reported motorist Warren Lake was driving by when he spotted smoke coming from the barn. He stopped his car, pounded on the front door to notify any occupants and then opened the door letting a dog out. Lake tried to call 9-1-1 on his cell phone but couldn't get a signal so he drove to a neighboring home and asked them to call for help.

The fire went to a first alarm almost immediately, and then quickly escalated to a second-alarm fire as firefighters arrived to find the barn, attached to home by an ell, fully engulfed in flames and spreading toward to main house.

While firefighters were able to the stop the spread of flames, water and smoke damage was done to the main house and the renters said they feared many, if not all their possessions were lost.

Diane McAuliffe said she, a friend, her adult son, Derek McAuliffe, along with his girlfriend and their two young children had been renting the home when it went into foreclosure.

McAuliffe said she has been living somewhere else since June, but most of her belongings remained at the home with her son's family, who just recently found a new place to live themselves.

"We're in the process of moving," McAuliffe said, speaking for the family. "It's not our home, but it's our stuff — pictures, furniture, clothes."

Evans added that the department hasn’t had to purchase a single Tough Book,

resulting in savings of more than $30,000 for the five laptops.

“There is no way I could have done that without these grants,” she said.

The department also recently received a Highway Safety Labor Day grant from

the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Traffic Safety. Evans

applied for it in July.

The grant provides funding for impaired driving enforcement. The grant covers

one officer to conduct eight driving under the influence patrols. The campaign

runs through Sept. 6.

not lock it at home, and 23 per cent saying they did not lock it when parked

Screnci compared the loss of the lights to the warning light coming on in a

car when the gasoline is low. Like a car, there was another gauge to monitor

A well-known east Mayo bookmaker was killed yesterday afternoon when his car

was in collision with a van towing a cherrypicker near Claremorris.

He was named locally last night as Peter Meenan, a married man in his 60s, who

lived in Ballyhaunis.

A woman accompanying Mr Meenan was injured and has been detained at Mayo

General Hospital in Castlebar. Her condition was said by the HSE last night to

be stable.

The incident occurred at about 3pm at Coilmore on the main Claremorris to

Ballyhaunis road.

Mr Meenan, who ran a bookie’s premises in Knock, previously had a bookie’s

shop in Ballyhaunis. He has a grown-up family and was a native of Co Donegal.

gunshot wound to the head. The body position and blood spatter told the

"On weekends, sometimes fights happen," store owner Nader Kader told 24 Hour

see anything going on outside, just shut the shutters down. It gets dark and

everybody leaves."

That is, until the city stepped in. City officials say the shutters, as well

as bars on a side window, violate code. Shutters and bars are allowed for

protection, but they must be on the inside of the windows -- where passing

motorists are less likely to notice them.

"Those bars were put up in violation of the city ordinance, simple as that,"

said John Williams, who lives nearby and complained about the security divides

at a public hearing.

The dispute came up in January, when the Zoning Board of Appeals denied Ms.

Tracy's request to keep the shutters and bars. The city issued a Corrective

Action Order on Aug. 3, demanding the store to remove them. The city since has

denied a petition to allow the safety measures.

Crime has gone down in the neighborhood -- and the few businesses with

exterior bars and shutters had them before the city ordinance changed,

Williams said.

"Being in the inner-city, your assumption is that that is going to happen,"

Williams said. "It hasn't happened. This is Grand Rapids, not Lebanon. This is

One of the most recent incidents occurred Friday night in the parking lot

windows of three locked vehicles in order to get inside. The thieves then

Another vehicle break-in occurred about two weeks ago and involved an unlocked

vehicle parked outside the Mambo Italiano restaurant on 701 East Naylor Mill

Road. Police say that in this incident, someone simply opened the door of the

vehicle and stole a laptop computer that was laying in the back seat.

The spree of vehicle break-ins dates back to at least early August. In the

early morning hours of Aug. 7, five locked vehicles parked outside an

apartment complex on Arthur Court on the city's south side had their side

windows broken out and various items removed.

One of the victims, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he was inside an

apartment when he heard his car alarm go off. The victim said he ran outside

to his car where he discovered his driver's side window had been shattered by

an unknown object. The victim said the thieves stole his car radio, a CD

player and various other items, including two half-empty bottles of cologne

that were hidden inside the storage compartment between his seats. Four other

vehicles parked nearby also had their windows smashed out by an unknown object

and various items taken.

The rise of chop shops, police say, also makes it less likely a stolen car will be recovered. In Mecklenburg, police only clear about a third of these crimes. And nearly half of stolen cars are never seen again.

Older Honda Accords and Civics continue to top local, state and national lists of stolen cars.

Unveiling a new prototype at a presentation outside the Japanese capital, officials at the Japanese car alarm maker said the new safety technology is designed to help a driver avoid hitting the vehicle ahead by monitoring the distance from the vehicle in front and its relative speed car alarm with a radar sensor installed below the front bumper.

When the latest system senses the need of deceleration of the vehicle to avoid hitting the car ahead, it warns the driver through a screen display, sounds an alarm, and then pushes the gas pedal up and applies partial braking to help the driver slow the vehicle down. If there is the possibility of a collision as the vehicle doesn’t slow enough even after warning, then the system will automatically apply harder braking and tighten passengers’ seat belts as it seeks to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

This is the latest advance in the “collision-free driver support systems” Nissan has been working on for some time.

These advanced technologies include a system called ”lane departure prevention” that’s designed to help the vehicle return to its running lane if it happens to drift out of it, and a “’blind spot intervention” system that helps the veicle keep away from approaching vehicles running behind in adjacent lanes.

Nissan was behind local rivals such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. in upgrading technologies in the early 2000s – it had more pressing matters to focus on, like restructuring.

But once it got back on its feet, the company resumed investments in R&D operations. “The efforts are now paying off,” Mitsuhiko Yamashita, a Nissan executive vice president, said at a briefing held Wednesday in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, south of Tokyo, where the company has a test course.

City officials are battling to control the increasingly aggressive troupes and there are fears the problem will only worsen with the influx of visitors to Cape Town during the World Cup next year.

"We spend the whole day basically rescuing tourists," said Mark Duffels, a volunteer who monitors the baboons in an effort to keep them at bay.

There are about 420 baboons in 17 troupes that roam the city's outskirts, especially the popular scenic sites along the coast. Baboons are a protected species under South African legislation but their persistent pursuit of food has led to conflict with residents.

The baboons associate humans and cars with food although people are strongly discouraged from feeding the animals.

But Justin O' Riain, head of the baboon research unit at the University of Cape Town, fears that the influx of visitors next year will only feed the primates' taste for human foods even more.

"Tourism is going to go through the roof, and this equals exposure to naive people and rich pickings," he said. "People who stop the car, they're going to get raided."

Concerned Simon's Town residents asked Monday for a crossing gate to be put up on the road that leads to the nearby Cape of Good Hope nature reserve.

Cars would be stopped before they enter baboon territory and given a brochure in their native language explaining why they should stay in their cars, lock their doors and close their windows if they see baboons.

"We're so anxious about tourists who can't read or understand English. It puts them at risk," said Liz Hardman, who is leading the campaign. "The perception is that the baboons are harmless and they're not. They're wild animals."

Personally I think the distinction is silly, I consider my phone number and voicemail details to be personal information and it is data that a wallpaper application has no call to be gathering. The developer claims it is part of his efforts to add a “favorites” feature to the software but then why wasn’t that ever mentioned in the information about the software. The information gather still looks highly suspicious and I for one would think twice before installing the app.

Lookout has stood by their initial report, reminding everyone that they said directly that they had no evidence of misuse of the data, just that a wallpaper app gathering it sure looked suspicious. The also reminded people that they reported the information to make clear that there are a lot of Android applications playing very fast and loose with data and doing suspicious things.
